Crowd violence mars Gombe, Rangers 6-goal thriller

Enugu Rangers scored a last-gasp goal to record a 3-3 away draw with Gombe United in a rescheduled week 19 game in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

The thrilling game was dramatic both on and off the pitch.

It was marred by crowd violence and questionable officiating with the hosts’ fans resulting to stoning the referee, Benjamin Odey, while Rangers manager got injured.

Irate fans also attacked Gombe goalkeeper, Emmanuel Fabiyi, for conceding the last minute goal.

Obinna Nwobodo got Rangers ahead in the 12th minute and made it two in the 58th minute.

Oladapo scored Gombe’s first goal from a goalmouth scramble in the 63rd minute.

Two minutes after his opener for Gombe, he scored again – a contentious penalty kick.

Abdullahi scored in the 92nd minute and while the home side seemed to be coasting to victory, Osas Okoro scored in the 95th minute for Rangers to share the spoils.

The draw moved Rangers to 16th in the league table with 23 points, while Gombe, also on 23 points, moved up from 18th to 17th position.

‘We can still get it right’ –Nwobodo confident of Enugu Rangers’ turnaround

Obinna Nwobodo is confident that Enugu Rangers will overcome their bad patch in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Last season, the Flying Antelopes ended a 32-year wait for top-flight glory but have been woeful in their title defense, thus, leading the log from behind.

And last week, Imama Amapakabo’s men were left to rue their luck after rivals, Enyimba came from behind to secure a 2-1 win in Calabar.

“We are not happy losing to Enyimba. We had no intention to lose the game but we must accept fate,” Nwobodo told Goal .

“We already know we are bottom of the league and that’s not where we planned to be at the beginning of the season.

“We worked so hard to earn a place at the top of the league last season and means we need to do more which we have started doing already.

“I think we just need to show more fighting spirit in our outstanding games. We can’t afford to lose more points after we lost to Enyimba. We believe we can still get it right,” he added.

“I believe and I know we will not remain at the bottom for too long. With hard work and determination, we will come out of the relegation places. It is very possible. We will continue to come out strong and give our all to turn things around.

“For the fans, we know we are not getting it right and I urge and beg them to always support us like they’ve always been doing when the going was good.

“Without them, there will be no us and I will wish them to keep supporting and encouraging us to do better. We know it is not too late to get it right.”
